JacTravel, the UK-based B2B wholesaler best known for its extensive range of hotels online and inbound travel services, has launched a new graduate training scheme at Future You, the Student Travel & Tourism Conference organised by the Institute of Travel & Tourism (ITT), on the final day of World Travel Market (WTM) in London.
JacTravel is looking to recruit two university graduates a year who will learn the business and develop in to the future management of the company. The new recruits will work in several different departments over a two year period in order to gain first-hand experience of wholesaling and tour operating – from negotiating and contracting hotels to establishing new customer relationships. Travel will be a requirement of the role, with potentially four to six weeks a year away from the office. At the end of the two year period, there will be a choice to work in the UK or abroad.
Prospective applicants will be asked to prove a range of skills and qualifications, including: a commercial mindset, business acumen, a positive, can-do attitude, an immersive personality, the ability to work on one’s own initiative as well as part of a team, excellent written and verbal communication, fluency in another language in addition to English, good time management, a desire to keep learning, understanding of the travel industry, a Tourism, Business Management, or related degree (preferably a 2:1 or above) having graduated in the last 2 years or by the start of the programme.
JacTravel’s CEO, Terry Williamson commented: “Whilst we are looking for people who have a good academic record; that is not the only thing. Character and attitude are crucial too. We want people who can demonstrate an ability to sell, to negotiate and to show leadership qualities. We also expect to see a genuine enthusiasm for travelling to new places and an innate desire to look after customers and think of ways to make them happy.”
JacTravel chose the ITT Future You conference as the place to announce its new scheme because of the event’s relevance and reach. Since the conference was launched in 2009; it has grown in to the largest attended event of the whole week at WTM with around 600 students from the UK, Europe and beyond attending.
Piers Crowder, JacTravel’s HR Manager responsible for the new training scheme says: “At ITT Future You, there is a large shoal of students who are all hungry to work in the travel industry, so it is an ideal place to start fishing for talent. We are also geared up to meet prospective candidates on our stand in the Global Village (GV230), where we will be pleased to answer questions and discuss what it is like to work in travel and tourism.”
Claire Steiner, ITT Chair of Education and Training and a principal organiser of ITT Future You concluded: “It is great to see a fast-growing, award-winning company like JacTravel, making a long-term commitment to invest in graduate recruitment and training. I hope to see more companies follow suit in future, as the advantages of taking on people who have been formally educated in the industry’s best practices become more widely appreciated.”
